Message from the Ambassador

As this newsletter was being prepared, Council President Donald Tusk was visiting Georgia. The visit presented an opportunity to take stock of Georgia's achievements on the path to European integration. Particularly, President Tusk spoke positively of Georgia’s prospects for visa liberalization and paid tribute to Georgia’s participation to the EU led CSDP operations. Georgia's contribution to the EU Mission in CAR was an example of international solidarity in the whole world, he said

President Tusk also visited the Administrative Boundary Line in the Tskhinvali region. A large segment of the ABL remains fenced off with the barbwire, while in other parts, the Russian occupying forces have been installing new signposts in the characteristically provocative manner. This latest affront on Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity was a cause of great concern to the Georgian government and a subject of much public attention and popular outcry. In this context, President Tusk, the EU institutions and Member States have expressed solidarity with Georgia and by doing so, underscored the importance of upholding fundamental principles of international law.

On 27 June we celebrated the first anniversary of the signing of the Georgia-EU Association Agreement, which was ratified early July by the Netherlands and Austria. This leaves just nine member states who have yet to ratify the Agreement. I dare to note that security challenges have by no means derailed Georgia from its European course.

As Europe remembers the shame of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact of 1939 and the Munich agreement of 1938, and as it prepares to celebrate the fall of the Berlin wall and the iron curtain in 1989, one question arises in our minds: Have we learned the lessons of history? Put another way, are we able to avoid repeating the mistakes that cast such a dark shadow over the 20th century?
